Windows XP has a System Restore function that does a pretty good job of monitoring file changes and replacing critical files. But, many files not considered critical to the operating system cause Windows to become unstable. So, Microsoft has added a utility to basically repair Windows by comparing the files on the hard drive with the Windows XP install disc files. That means you will need your Windows install CD!
