It is unavoidable that installing and removing software will eventually cause Windows to end up with files that are not original to the operating system. Spyware and virus removal also lead to corrupt and unstable versions of system files. Windows XP has a System Restore function that does a pretty good job of monitoring file changes and replacing critical files.
