DSL Not Working Due
To Power Issue
One
of the more common broadband issues Sugarloaf PC sees is with DSL not
coming back after power issues. Typically, the lights flicker, go off
and on a few times, or the lights brown out for a few seconds. Once in a while, the broadband provider makes a change to their equipment that causes your system to lose contact with them.
Almost
every time we see this problem, there is a router in the connection.
But, it isn't the router that is the problem, in this case. Either the DSL modem or
the computer's network adapter is not properly resetting. There is a
simple order to bringing these units back on line. Try this...
-
Shut down the computer
- Unplug the router
- Unplug the DSL modem
- Wait about 10 seconds
- Plug in the DSL modem
- Plug in the router
- Start the computer
This
will work most of the time. Putting the router and broadband modem on a powerstrip works just as well. Be sure the computer has shut down, before killing the power!
There are other issues which cause Internet
connectivity to stop. Sometimes, it is a Windows issue. Other times,
power failures cause damage to devices not plugged into a surge protector
or a UPS. But, this is an easy test to find out if you really need a service call.
Of
course, we will be happy to come out, if you need us to!
