Getting To Sugarloaf From San Bernardino
Whether you are coming up the 91 or 10 Freeway, you can get to Big Bear... and Sugarloaf.
From the 91 and 10 Freeways - You have two choices to get here:
-
The West side via the 330, which most visitors take to the lake area
- The East side, which brings you up as far away from town as possible
. Sugarloaf is on the back side. So this is the way I will show.
First, review the overview map of the San Bernardino freeways and roads to Big Bear.

You will see we are on the East side of the Big Bear community. Get onto the 10 Freeway heading East. As you pass the highway 30 interchange, get over and be ready to exit the freeway. First, you will see the Tennessee exit, then the Orange Exit. You want the Orange exit. The exit will come to a stop sign for Eureka. Proceed to the next intersection, which has a stop light. That is Orange. Turn Left. Follow Orange up two lights and turn right, onto Lugonia. This will become the 38 and take you all the way up to our neighborhood. Stay on this road. Here is the map of the Orange exit.

NOTE: After about 15 minutes of being on the 38, the road is going to make a sharp left and proceed up the mountain. In a few miles, you will pass through a small town with a 35 MPH speed limit, called Angelus Oaks. Be careful not to get caught in a speed trap. It only lasts about a half mile.
The twists and turns will last about 10 miles, and then the road will become winding, but very drivable at 55 MPH. When you see signs marking low speeds for upcoming turns, they are very accurate (i.e.- 20MPH).
After some 35 minutes of mountain driving with the mountain side mostly on your right, you will begin a consistent downhill run, with the mountain side on your left. You are coming into the Bear Valley area. When you see the Erwin Lake sign, you are about a mile from your exit. Start looking for a road called Baldwin Lane. It will only be on the left and the road will be bending to the right. Take it up the the stop sign, which is Maple Lane. There will be a fire station on your right. Turn left. We will be three short intersections down and on the right. It is a 2 story house on an intersection (called Laurel). There is parking in front, and around the corner on the side.
